The basis for the project was the landscape of the Dnieper valley - a slope descending to the river near the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where the Holodomor memorial with a monument to its victims is located and where a new museum is being built. The key image of the project is the fault and shift of the "tectonic plates", under which the underground museum is located. This is a symbol of bringing into the light of the early hidden truth about the mass famine of 1932-1933, which killed seven million Ukrainians.
Actually, the truth about this disaster is revealed in the museum exposition, the project of which was carried out by the bureau Nizio Design International. Its first part will be devoted to the system of state propaganda and repression in the USSR, the causes of the Holodomor. There will also be presented a panorama of the tragedy itself in all its aspects, including the criminal actions of the Soviet authorities. The second part will include stories of salvation from starvation, examples of mutual assistance, etc. The preservation of the memory of the Holodomor in the conditions of the official silence of the tragedy and repression against the Ukrainian intelligentsia and clergy will be presented as important subjects.
The total area of the museum is almost 14,000 m2; more than 3500 m2 of them will be occupied by the exhibition.
