The Wall bureau concept won the competition for the project for the reconstruction of the Moscow Youth Palace on Frunzenskaya, carried out by the customer, MDM JSC, in 2018. The current version, revised and revised, was approved the other day.
The goal of the authors was to increase the area of the Youth House, while preserving its existing appearance. The "glass and concrete", as well as the mosaic frieze will be preserved. “The Moscow Palace of Youth is a shining example of modernism, and the architects were very respectful of its history,” stressed the chief architect of Moscow, Sergei Kuznetsov.
It is planned to clear the building of "unnecessary advertising", remove the late partitions of the rental space inside, and the area in front of the MDC, in turn, will be cleared of cars and installed on it.
The windows of the palace, the authors write, will be “lowered down, due to which the facade will become more transparent and light, and a through passage from Komsomolsky Prospekt to the Trubetskoy Estate Park will be opened. Meanwhile, at the site of the steps of the stylobate of the palace from the side of the avenue and along the southern facade, a dark-stone volume of the covered gallery appears, in which it is planned to place rental areas, for example, creative workshops and restaurants, according to a press release from the ICA. Two blocks of steps are preserved on the main facade, and all on the northern one, where the exit from the metro is.
On the back side, between the MDM and the park of the Trubetskoy estate, a very narrow building appears, called the vertical museum in the project. It has 6 above-ground floors and a single-storey parking underneath. The new building is connected to the old MDM building by a suspended walkway at the third floor level. A pedestrian street appears between the building and the old building, which the architects call Artbat, and at the base of the new volume there is a wide - about 2/3 of its width - passage to the park. Thus, a pedestrian connection is created: from Komsomolsky Prospekt it will be possible to go to the park through both buildings.

The new body is interpreted as a laconic parallelepiped made of milk glass.
An observation deck appears on the roof of MDM in the project, and its interior space has been rethought: the lower tier is interpreted as a city square, open to citizens, including those who do not have a ticket to the show.
The reconstruction is planned to be carried out in 3 stages until 2022: first, a new stylobate will appear, then - a bar of the exhibition complex, the third stage will be the reorganization of the MDM interior space. It is planned that after the reconstruction, the Youth House will become part of the long-planned walking route from Gorky Park across the Andreevsky Bridge to Kievskaya.

The youth house was designed since 1965, then it was planned to build it on Vorobyovy Gory. The building was built from 1982 to 1987/1988 and is an example of late, classicizing modernism.
KVN was filmed in the MDM hall, musicals have been staged since the 2000s. The hall itself has already been reconstructed not so long ago - in 2014 its capacity increased to 1,850 spectators. The 2014 reconstruction was carried out by the Dutch musical distribution company Stage Entertainment, which has been staging performances in the building since 2005. However, at the beginning of 2018, information appeared that Stage Entertainment had begun searching for a new premises.
