An airport with a terminal area of 700,000 m2 was built in five years in Daxing County - 46 km south of the center of Beijing. You can get there by Aeroexpress in 20 minutes.
The need for a completely new air hub stems from the fact that the demand for international flights in China - especially in the metropolitan area - is growing the fastest in the world. The existing main airport,
including the Norman Foster terminal built for the 2008 Olympics, is unable to cope with the load. Therefore, the initial capacity of the construction of Zaha Hadid Architects and ADPI, 45 million people per year, in 2025 will increase to 72 million, and after the expansion envisaged in the project will reach 100 million passengers and 4 million tons of cargo annually.
The airport, which received the international name PKX, has a built-in station connecting electric trains and the national high-speed train network.

The middle part of the structure is organized around the courtyard - a reference, according to the authors of the project, to the plan of a traditional Chinese house. Six "fluid forms" direct passengers to the center and provide the interior with sunlight, as do the elongated openings in the ceilings. Natural light, like a simple plan, will help passengers navigate.
Despite the size of the airport, it was possible to do without shuttle trains: all the gates - 79 of them - can be reached on foot due to their location at five “radii” from the center of the facility: the journey to the farthest “gate” will take less than 8 minutes. The number and location of the "gates" allows you to quickly receive passengers from six fully filled Airbus A380s at the same time.

The building has solar panels with a total capacity of at least 10 megawatts. The district heating system with heat recovery includes a ground source heat pump: it covers an area of almost 2.5 million m2. A rainwater collection and management system is envisaged, which includes natural storage and purification of up to 2.8 million m3 of water in specially created swamps, lakes and channels. This flood control measure will also help reduce the microclimate impact of the heat island.
