Philips and SvetoServis presented the lighting of the first 19 buildings in the center of Moscow, which was implemented as part of the Moscow government's decree “On a comprehensive urban target program for the development of outdoor lighting and architectural and artistic illumination of the city of Moscow for 2011–2015”.

The facades of houses on Novy Arbat, Prospekt Mira, Tverskaya and Tverskaya-Yamskaya were decorated with innovative dynamic lighting that changes the appearance of these streets depending on the given regime.

“When designing the facades of buildings in Moscow, we took into account the best international experience in the field of urban lighting. The use of LEDs is optimal for architectural lighting of historic buildings, they create a dynamic appearance and an attractive look, while at the same time they reduce costs and are easy to maintain.

The most interesting and difficult stage of the work was the creation of media facades on book houses on Novy Arbat. In accordance with the concept developed by us, various thematic videos are shown on the media facades. For the first time, such facades carry an artistic and informational load, said Ekaterina Boos, executive director of SvetoService.

The new lighting of buildings was the first step in the project of architectural and artistic illumination of Moscow, involving 13 exit highways. In total, more than 18,000 Philips lighting fixtures were used to upgrade the lighting, including eW Flex SLX and iColor Flex LMX smart LED strings, as well as eW Blast Powercore, ColorGraze Powercore, eW Graze Powercore, ColorBlast Powercore, iW LED luminaires. Blast PowerCore and DecoFlood².

"However, it must be said that the emphasis of the new city program is also on energy saving, modern lighting devices allow you to optimize costs due to the consumption of a small amount of electricity and a long service life."

When developing the lighting, the features and character of each street were taken into account. On Tverskaya and Prospekt Mira, bas-reliefs, pediments, pilasters and other architectural elements of buildings were emphasized by light-colored illumination. Thus, in the dark, the facades look voluminous and elegant. In addition, building lighting is integrated into one control system and synchronized.

A fundamentally different concept was implemented for buildings - "open books" on Novy Arbat. This complex, emphatically modern for its era, was erected in the sixties of the 20th century. It was intended to make the usual features of the city more dynamic. In order to revitalize the houses and make them more attractive, so-called media facades were used. Each façade consists of 600 Flex LMX LED strings of a variety of LEDs that are invisible during daylight hours. Various videos are broadcast on them, and the plot can flow from one building to another.

“Thanks to the installation of LED floodlights and luminaires, it became possible to use dynamic lighting that supports three main scenarios: everyday, festive and weekend. For example, on weekends or during national holidays, you can easily reconfigure the lighting for a brighter, more colorful and festive mode, as well as program the equipment so that the colors of the illumination change synchronously on all the houses of the street. On weekdays, architectural lighting is dominated by calmer colors that emphasize the decorative elements of each building, highlighting the facades, bas-reliefs and columns. The use of the latest LED equipment has made it possible to improve the appearance of buildings while reducing energy consumption, - said Peter van Berkel, Vice President and Head of the Lighting Solutions sector of Philips in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. “We are confident that both residents of the capital and tourists will like the new look of Moscow streets.”

A unified control and monitoring system will harmoniously combine outdoor street lighting and architectural lighting of buildings, creating a single color and light concept of the city. Given the given scenario, the entire street can be painted with the same patterns or each house can be given its own image and character. In addition to the aesthetic component of the program, there is also an important psychological aspect. Changing the shades of the backlight depending on the season will help maintain the optimistic psychological mood of people in the city, even during the gloomy off-season.
