The small port city of Køge, 40 km from Copenhagen, but within the boundaries of its agglomeration, has become an important transport hub for the metropolitan region. A new station has opened there, connecting the Copenhagen-Ringsted high-speed line, the city / suburban train route and the highway along the Køge bay.
The project was in 2014 the subject of
major international competition, but this is not the peculiarity of this transport hub. The main structure of the station, which is complemented only by platforms and parking, is a pedestrian bridge 225 m long and 9 m wide, spanning two parallel railway lines and a motorway. Its largest span - 58 m - goes over the highway.
Escalators, stairs and elevators lead to the bridge from the platforms. The exterior is clad in shiny anodized aluminum and the interior is wood to create a warmer environment than conventional transport facilities. Panoramic glazing on the north side is combined with 31 small windows on the south.
The bridge was assembled in six sections, the heaviest one weighed 195 tons. It is designed for 1,800 people at a time, while about 8,000 passengers use the station daily. Every hour the station receives in each of two directions three trains of the high-speed regional line and six electric trains.
