Al Janoub was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in conjunction with Aecom and Schlaich Bergermann Partner engineers for its convertible roof. The stadium is located in the city of Al-Wakrah, 20 km from the capital of the country, Doha: they are connected by a metro line. At the end of the championship, it will become the home arena of the club of the same name, and it opened with the final match of the national tournament - the Emir of Qatar Cup.

During World Cup 2022 - Al Janoub will host group stage matches and quarterfinals - the stadium capacity will be 40,000 spectators, and then it will be reduced to 20,000 seats and temporary shopping facilities around it will be removed. The dismantled stands will be presented to one of the developing countries where there is a need for sports infrastructure.

The peculiarity of the building is a cable-stayed roof made of PTFE polymer, which can be completely closed so that it can be kept artificially cool inside. This is necessary due to the extremely hot climate of Qatar, so that football players and spectators feel comfortable during the summer months. It is worth noting that for the same reason, the time for the World Cup was shifted from summer to November - December 2022.

Al-Wakrah is a seaside town that the clients asked to be reflected in the project. As a result, the shape of the arena itself and the membrane, the structure of the floor and the roof overhang is inspired by the traditional dhows - their inverted hulls, internals and sails. The glazed façade of the lower tier of the stadium is covered with a bronze ornamental print that protects the interior from the sun: it pays tribute to the traditional crafts of the Arab world.
