Expo 1967 was located on two islands on the St. Lawrence River: Saint Helene, which was expanded for this purpose, and the specially poured Notre Dame. More than 50 million people visited the exhibition in six months of its work, an absolute record for the last century (at that time only 20 million lived in Canada). 62 countries took part, and the Expo was remembered for its various architectural achievements. Some of them remained in place (while the USSR pavilion of Mikhail Posokhin, for example, returned to its homeland and was located at VDNKh), and the exhibition area became a recreational area with educational, cultural and entertainment institutions.
Part of its territory on the island of Saint-Helene is known as Jean Drapeau Park (named after the mayor of Montreal, who, among other things, ensured the success of the Expo). It stretches from the Biosphere, Buckminster Fuller's enormous geodesic dome, to the southern tip of the island, where Alexander Calder's 22-meter sculpture Three Discs, better known as The Man, is located - commemorating the optimistic theme of Expo 1967: Man and his world."
Lemay architects took into account the man-made and natural context of their work in Jean Drapeau Park: these are the buildings of the Expo, the St. Lawrence River, views of the city, including its historical core - Montreal in 2017 turned 375 years old. The landscaping does not distract from the surroundings, but sets functional accents. The original axis of the park has been preserved, supplemented by new spaces and pavilions of "angular" shapes and different shades of gray. This is a reference to the triangle as the basis of the geodesic dome structure.
An important role in the project is played by an amphitheater with 65,000 seats in a natural depression of the relief, but it is also suitable for much more intimate events, and outside of use serves as an interesting public space. An information pavilion, a restaurant and sanitary facilities appeared.
