A square plot on rue Lursine in the 13th arrondissement of Paris was owned by the military even before the French Revolution. In the 19th century, it acquired a modern look - with a drop in heights and barracks buildings. After the Second World War, two sides of it were "renovated". From the south, a modernist ensemble of two towers appeared on the stylobate: servicemen still live there. From the north, there is the discreet building of the Jean Zé boarding school, where they are preparing to enter the best universities in France. These buildings were not touched by the Chartier Dalix project, but it was necessary to take into account their close proximity.
Two buildings of the barracks - from the east and west - are occupied by study and research premises, a library and a copying center of the law faculty, and they are connected by a semi-underground new wing inscribed in the relief with a lobby and reception desk, as well as a lecture hall for 500 students. It was created on the site of an underground garage adjacent to the stylobate of the post-war barracks.
This wing, where corten steel plays an important role inside and out, smoothly transitions into the park created on the site of the parade ground. Its paths, ladders, old and planted now plane trees should connect and reconcile all three neighbors: the lyceum, barracks and the Faculty of Law. It is the park that, due to the small size of the new wing and the reconstruction of historical buildings almost imperceptible from the outside, has become the face of the project. The landscaping was done by architects DH Paysage.
In the interiors of the former barracks, the Chartier Dalix architects have retained the original "generous" proportions in the spacious corridors and open stairwells. To emphasize the border between old and new, they did not use suspended ceilings - therefore, all communications are open to the interior - or hide stairs that look like a monumental sculpture. The materials used here are steel and solid oak. The furniture was specially made for this project.
We have published ChartierDalix projects more than once: recall their secondary schools of biodiversity - in
Boulogne-Billancourt and Ivry-sur-Seine.
