GRAPHISOFT, a leading developer of architectural software, announces the winners of the open all-Russian competition for student projects GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018. The competition for the best project using information modeling technologies is aimed at developing a program to support architecture and construction universities in training future specialists.
More than 90 projects were submitted for the 2018 competition. The most active in terms of the number of submitted works were the Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture (Simferopol), Southern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don) and Samara State Technical University. The selection criteria for the three finalists were the level of architecture and graphic presentation, as well as the effective use of BIM tools from GRAPHISOFT, based on the principles of information modeling. The jury paid close attention to the quality and detail of the digital models of the competition projects.
The main objectives of the competition are to assess the level of proficiency in modern technologies in the field of architectural design, generalize the experience of implementing BIM technologies in universities and create conditions for the exchange of experience.
The shortlist of the competition included sixteen projects. The three winning projects received the highest architectural scores and were unanimously selected. Two of the three projects were leaders in the evaluation of files (BIM), however, disputes arose with the third project - in this nomination, two projects received the highest marks in architecture and BIM at once. One received a high mark for architecture, the other for a file and the difference in final marks was only 1 point. That is why the jury decided to award a special prize in the category “Multi-apartment residential building” for “17-storey residential building with a public part”, Ekaterina Chernyshova.
The winners of GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018 are:

What attracted you to the GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018 competition?
I found out about the BIM PROJECT 2018 contest quite by accident, and I was immediately interested in it! First, ARCHICAD is a unique program that is gaining popularity in Eastern Siberia. The transition to BIM design prompted many architectural firms to switch to ARCHICAD, which I am incredibly happy about, because I have been working in this program for more than five years, from the very beginning of my studies at the university. In addition, they were interested in the terms of the competition, namely the evaluation of the working file in which the project was developed. I was immediately curious how my use of ARCHICAD could be judged by the jury.
What are the main benefits you see in using ARCHICAD when designing?
I think that one of the main advantages of the program is the clear structure of its use. A simple interface, endless possibilities in creating a project from sketch to working, integration with almost all types of files, calculation, modeling, rendering - and all this in one program! I especially appreciate in my work that the design process takes place simultaneously in 2D and 3D dimensions: to develop layouts and at the same time "sculpt" architecture - that synergy that is very difficult to achieve, but which is easy to master with ARCHICAD! The connection of all types of drawings and volume is invaluable, because architecture is created through many edits, each of which costs time!
What are your favorite ARCHICAD tools that have been actively used to create the competition project? What tasks have you been able to solve with their help?
It is very pleasant that with each new version ARCHICAD becomes more convenient, modern and progressive. This is especially noticeable in the latest versions when working with stairs and morphs. Also nice was the update in 3D modeling, namely the lightening of the view by switching to a simplified white model. Thank you very much to the organizers for the opportunity to participate in such a competition!
Jury comment
Attention is immediately drawn to the images of the project - these are not standard renders, but rather an artistic way of presenting images. The project was worked out in great detail: the author did a lot of research work, proposing his own planning system for families of different types. All project displays (plans, fragments of plans, facades and images) are selected and assembled very painstakingly. The project file has also been carefully worked out - the model is detailed and it is clear that the author is able to use all ARCHICAD tools that allow working with graphics. The only advice that could be given to the author is to pay more attention to the informational component of the project.

What attracted you to the GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018 competition?
First, the relevance of the topic of BIM modeling. This design approach is now becoming a must. The competition first of all encourages you to execute your model as professionally as possible. In the educational process, the correctness of the model is not monitored in any way: this is a matter of the student's conscience, we hand over only printed tablets. And here the opportunity was given to demonstrate the skill of correct modeling, to show all the responsibility with which you approach work - and I am glad that my project was highly appreciated. Thanks to the BIM PROJECT competition from GRAPHISOFT, it was possible to unleash its potential, this is the biggest incentive!
What are the main benefits you see in using ARCHICAD when designing?
GRAPHISOFT does a lot for students to know and love the ARCHICAD environment, to design in this environment. Training videos on the official channel GRAPHISOFT Russia, active groups in social networks, lectures at universities, webinars of the competition, a free educational version - I don't know of any other design program whose developers would be so interested in students' knowledge. There are many programs that ARCHICAD can work with in a "live" bundle - including Grasshopper, Lumion. The creation of the BIMx hypermodel allowed for the most detailed and at the same time without unnecessary efforts to convey their developments to the teacher. I take this opportunity to effectively demonstrate the project using virtual reality glasses.
What are your favorite ARCHICAD tools that have been actively used to create the competition project? What tasks have you been able to solve with their help?
It is important to say that I always work in the most current version of the program, so all the advantages of ARCHICAD 22 were used - for example, a complex profile editor and spherical panoramic visualization.
The project contains a lot of explosion-diagrams, in this I was helped by a bunch of functions "Graphic replacement, 3D Section, 3D Document", and then I only needed to save the view. It may sound complicated, but it's actually quite simple and fast. Explosion diagrams make your project much more understandable for any person, therefore their use is so in demand, and it is important to know how to correctly approach the process of creating such diagrams. Correct work in the Project Navigator and counting everything through the Catalogs - no comments here, the correct organization of work is a very important design point.
The relief (exported to SketchUp from Google Earth, and then to ARCHICAD via a script) was added via a.txt file as a 3D geodetic grid. The visualization was created using CineRender (post-render in Adobe Photoshop). The output of an album of drawings and even the layout of the tablet, which I tried for the first time within the framework of the competition, is ARCHICAD for me a universal program that helps to embody all my ideas and solve the tasks that an architecture student faces every day!
Jury comment
It is immediately clear that the author has his own presentation style. The project has been worked out in detail - here you can find a personal story with characters, diagrams, and a small analysis of the site. The project file is one of the highest quality among those submitted for the competition. You can even say the reference. The structure is clearly visible in the file: in the View Map, all Views are saved in separate folders, each View has high-quality View Parameters settings. For example, the author used not only Combinations of Layers, but also his own system of "naming" of Layers. Separately, I would like to note the work with information in this project: the Directories are perfectly configured. The filing is also done directly in ARCHICAD Layouts. Almost everything that we see on the sheets is created in ARCHICAD.

What attracted you to the GRAPHISOFT BIM PROJECT 2018 competition?
First of all, this is an opportunity to prove yourself when working with such a modern approach to design as BIM, as well as to receive professional criticism from leading experts in this field. I was also attracted by the opportunity to compare my approaches with the methods of work of other participants in the competition.
What are the main benefits you see in using ARCHICAD when designing?
The main advantage of ARCHICAD is the active interconnection between all components of the project and volumetric design. Also, I cannot fail to note the wide range of automation - from concept to documentation, - which allows freeing up resources for solving design problems.
What are your favorite ARCHICAD tools that have been actively used to create the competition project? What tasks have you been able to solve with their help?
The competitive project actively used the possibility of using Linked Modules. Due to the large number of duplicate elements, the detailing of each of them was brought to the maximum level, and it was this function that made it possible to do this.
Another favorite tool of mine, Graphical Replacement, dramatically reduces project design time. With its help, it is convenient to form various ways of designing drawings and project diagrams. Using 3D cuts helped to create a volumetric image, and then output it as a vector drawing.
And of course the 3D Document function! Creation of 3D diagrams (explosive diagrams) helped to demonstrate in detail the design solutions, and the layout of axonometric floor diagrams in the form of a 3D Document made it possible to demonstrate all functional blocks and elements.
Jury comment
The project was one of the first loaded and immediately attracted attention with its detailed study and presentation. The author managed not only to create a beautiful "picture", but also to make a very informative project, having worked through all the volumes of buildings. The file is very neat, with its own structure in the Navigator Panel and the use of Linked Modules. Using standard ARCHICAD tools and functions, the author was able to get beautiful graphics based on the model.
