The theme of the future architectural exhibition will be the motto “Out There. Architecture Beyond Building.
American architecture critic and curator Aaron Betsky directed the Netherlands Architectural Institute (NAI) for six years, the world's premier architecture research and exhibition center, and last year took over as director of the Cincinnati Museum of Art.
According to Betsky, these days there are not enough buildings - or, on the contrary, too many - for a person to feel comfortable in the modern world. We must be ready to use all forms, types, images and methods to create, understand and order an ever-changing world. All of these elements can be sourced from the arts, interiors, landscape design, media projection, and literature. We must not allow buildings to become tombs of architecture, but we must create an architecture that would help us find our place in the world around us, understand and convey it.
The XI Architecture Biennale will feature installations, manifestos, “landscapes and episodes” of “architecture outside the building” specially created for it. It will also showcase experimental architecture from around the world, highlighting innovative aspects of contemporary architectural practice.
The XI Architecture Biennale in Venice will open on September 11 and run until November 23, 2008.
