Within the framework of the Artemis program, which was launched last year, NASA is busy with the problem of man's "return" to the moon. For its successful implementation, the Olympus project was conceived, including both the first extraterrestrial human settlement itself, and the development of the necessary building technologies for this.
BIG architects work in collaboration with ICON, developers of high-tech construction methods, and SEArch + (Space Exploration Architecture) architects and designers, who are primarily concerned with the safety of astronauts and a high-quality, human-friendly environment. SEArch + has a long history of partnerships with NASA and leading aerospace corporations on the "human" dimension of space exploration.
The project, like its predecessors (we wrote about them
here and here), takes into account the particular complexity and high cost of delivering any cargo outside the Earth, therefore it is based on 3D printing from local materials, which will also allow the construction of more reliable structures than inflatable or metal structures, with better protection from small meteorites, extremely high and low temperature, radiation. It is also planned to use robots, which will compensate for the lack of working hands.
For BIG, this is already the second space project: the first, prototype
"Martian Science City" is currently being implemented in Dubai.
The Olympus project, like other similar developments, is aimed not only at conquering space, but also at finding “sustainable” solutions for life on Earth.
