Carefully restore and preserve

Tom Sawyer Fest was opened in Samara in 2015. The initiator was a local journalist Andrei Kochetkov, who for years and completely unsuccessfully wrote about the deplorable state of the city's historical buildings. And Andrey and his friends decided to paint them on their own - these houses became the first objects of the unique festival. Over the years, activists have restored more than 80 old houses in different cities of the country.

The heroes of the festival are not frozen monuments, but houses where life is in full swing. For restoration, they choose houses in which people live. Projects are coordinated with the local administration, residents take part in the renovation of houses. Buildings are cleaned of old finishes, covered with plaster, doors and windows are changed, roofs are repaired. Particular attention is paid to the facades as the face of a historic building, which must be very carefully restored and preserved. Funds for repairs are collected by the whole world - sponsors help, who donate money, supply building materials, ordinary citizens also contribute money, as much as they can. Participants also receive grants.

The houses were preserved miraculously

This year, despite the difficult situation due to the pandemic and restrictions, "Tom Sawyer Fest" still passes. Nizhny Novgorod takes part in it for the third time. Last year, houses 20 and 22A on Novaya Street in the historic quarter of the city were restored, as well as house number 16 on the street. Korolenko. This year, work continued in houses 22 A and 20 on the street. New, as well as 20A.

Old buildings, each with history, are located within the boundaries of the historical territory "Old Nizhny Novgorod". House No. 22A is a half-stone building designed by the famous Nizhny Novgorod architect Alexei Pakhomov for college secretary Marya Vasilyeva in 1847.

House No. 20 is the main house of the estate of the soldier Varvara Berdinikova, built in 1846 according to the project of the famous Nizhny Novgorod architect Georg Ivanovich Kizevetter. And on the site of house 20A there was an outbuilding of the estate, in 1859 Berdinikova sold it, the building was demolished, and a new one was built in its place. According to the State Expertise Act, this is a newly identified object of cultural heritage, which dates back to the late 19th century. Now the house is residential, and the owners are advocating for its preservation. Volunteers hope to find important artifacts from the history of this house during the restoration, as has happened more than once. For example, on the street. Korolenko, 18 of the interesting finds have put together an exhibition.

“Houses in the quarter of st. Korolenko - Novaya, surrounded by high-rise buildings and business centers, have survived by some miracle. The quarter, in fact, remained reserved. Therefore, the work of preserving the historical environment must be continued. There will be a whole line of restored houses here, - say the organizers of the festival in Nizhny Novgorod.

According to the canons of restoration

Works in the house 22A on the street. A new one began last year - the facade was restored here. For this, Baumit finishing materials were used. The revival of historical buildings, the restoration of cultural heritage sites require a competent approach and high quality work, as well as materials with special characteristics.

The Austrian company produces special products adapted for the restoration and renovation of historic facades. Experience in building renovation shows that these finishing materials are excellent for renovating old plaster coatings. The company conducts serious research of its products in the VIVA park, the largest center for comparative analysis of building materials in Europe, therefore the developed technology can be called efficient and reliable.

On the recommendation of an expert "Baumit" Valeria Karagergi the facade of the house was restored with historical bricks and moisture-resistant plaster Sanova AnticoPure … The main enemies of old buildings are time and moisture, which destroys walls and spoils the appearance of the house. When restoring such objects, special attention is paid to creating a protective layer. An important part of the renovation is the application of sanitizing plaster, which is able to remove moisture from the wall and protect it from efflorescence.

Sanova AnticoPure is a dry lime mixture intended for the restoration of old buildings. As the technician explained Dmitry Petrov, curator "Tom Sawyer Fest", during the restoration it is necessary to use lime plasters, not cement - they are vapor-permeable, "breathe", drain water from the base and prevent the old brick from collapsing. It is Baumit plasters with natural lime that allow adhering to those engineering solutions that were used in the construction of restored buildings. These are the requirements of the restoration. In addition, lime is a natural antiseptic that will protect the wall from the growth of fungi and mold.

Will withstand all the vagaries of nature

This year, volunteers will paint the restored facade of house no. 22A, the basement of house 20A on the street. New. It is also necessary to repaint the facade of the house 20/13 on the street. New. For this, use mineral paint. Baumit SilikatColor and acrylic Baumit PuraColor … They create a coating that will withstand both rain and frost. Mineral paints are used for facades, as the pigments in their composition are resistant to fading. Baumit SilikatColor has a high vapor permeability and withstands all the vagaries of nature. It is recommended to use it for restoration work. This product was used in the restoration of Count Razumovsky's estate in Moscow, the Narkomfin House (one of the main monuments of Soviet constructivism in Russia), and the cathedral in Kazan.

Baumit PuraColor is a premium, highly resistant paint that features intense shades. Its main advantage is color fastness due to its good connection with pigments. The paint withstands bad weather well, is vapor permeable. Cool Pigment technology can be tinted in all colors of the BaumitLife palette.

According to experts, when working with such materials, it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations so that the facade retains its updated appearance for many years. According to Dmitry Petrov, Baumit provides a technological map for work, where the procedure for performing all plastering works is detailed.
