The New City Library of Taiwan's oldest city reminds of local traditions with its large-scale “hat” ornamentation, covering the upper tiers of the building. Their facades are covered with golden aluminum profiles, which protect the interior from overheating.
The projecting end of the building with an inverted staircase profile is supported by light, slender supports, which the architects compare to a bamboo forest. Four sunken courtyards are arranged under them, one of which is accessible from the outside: it is planned to hold exhibitions, concerts and lectures there.
In the interior, the double-height atrium is occupied by an installation by a British designer
Paul Coxedge in the form of flying sheets of paper, a metaphor for freedom of thought. On the ground floor, with an abundance of wooden details, there is a "living room" where you can read the latest press, terminals for self-ordering books, a 24-hour reading room for students with 130 seats, and just below there is a children's section with an outdoor play area.
A bright red staircase leads up: first - to the media library and the department for teenagers, then - to the main collection of books, and above - to the "heritage" section, with a memorial exhibition, an archive of the period of Japanese occupation, books by Taiwanese authors. On the same level, there are four green terraces and three multifunctional rooms - studios or classrooms, as well as a cafe. At the very top there is a theater hall for 324 spectators and a conference hall for 123 seats. The library's program, with a total area of 37,000 m2, also includes the already familiar “digital workshop”, an art gallery and a section with books in Braille.
