New York-based Diller Scofidio & Renfro's design involves a very tactful intervention in an ensemble created by masters such as Philip Johnson and Ero Saarinen, along with Gordon Banschaft and other architects.
The architects' attention is focused on the northern zone of the ensemble, which now makes a gloomy impression, is inconvenient for motorists and is not loved by residents.
After renovation, Lincoln Center will have a glass pedestrian bridge, LCD screens will inform citizens about performances and concerts, individual buildings, now all uniformly clad in travertine, will receive transparent glass lobbies, in a small area between the Metropolitan Opera, Avery Fisher Concert Hall and Vivian Theater Beaumont will have a restaurant with a green roof, as well as a public garden. The pond in the center of the complex will also get a more relevant outline.
