Elbrücken is the terminus of the U4 line from the city center to the new district of Hafen City. It is located in the Elbrucken quarter, which concludes the area from the east. It is there that the construction of the tallest building in Hamburg, the Elbtower skyscraper, designed by David Chipperfield is planned.
This metro station, or U-Bahn, is the first stage of a transport hub: according to the gmp and sbp project, there will also be an S-Bahn city train station and a 65-meter glazed bridge (it is already being built), with the help of which it will be possible to change trains from one mode of transport to another.
Elbrücken is the name of a series of bridges spanning the Elbe at this location. They are an important landmark of Hamburg, monuments of engineering art of the late XIX - early XX centuries, so the authors of the project of the station of the same name decided to work in the same aesthetics - which also brought them victory in the architectural competition (2012–2013), which was held by the municipal government responsible for the metro and buses. the company Hamburger Hochbahn AG, and the order for the steam station of the city train - already from Deutsche Bahn.
The main part of the metro station is its 136 m long roof, about 16.25 m high and a total area of almost 6,000 m2. U-Bahn trains will rise to it from an underground tunnel parallel to the bridges across the Elbe, and the lattice frame of the station floors, brought out (the glazing is removed inward), "enters into dialogue" with the dynamic arches of these engineering structures.
The grand opening of the station took place on December 6, and from today until Sunday inclusive, citizens and tourists will be able to ride from the center of Hamburg to the Elbrücken station for free and admire the panorama of Hafen City and a specially arranged light show from there.
