Steeles West station will include not only an underground section with two above-ground pavilions, but also a bus terminal and a power substation. The original version of the project (2009) was made in a "futuristic" way, Alsop intended to give the structures curvilinear, streamlined shapes, reminiscent of spaceships.
Despite the fact that work has already been underway for two years, in 2011 a revised project was presented - in a completely different spirit. Now the buildings themselves have been given a conditionally industrial look, and corten steel has become the main material on the outside and in the exterior. This material was also chosen so that the rust covering such sheets protects them from further destruction, which is important in the harsh Canadian climate.
The project includes eco-components: for example, a long bus terminal building will be covered with a green roof.
The project has a budget of CAD 159 million and is scheduled for completion in 2015. A certain problem is the sparsely populated surrounding areas: although there is a university campus nearby, only a few thousand people will use the station in the morning. This waste of the city authorities has already provoked protests from residents.
