The new building is to become a gateway to the forest, and the project is to transform the area into a popular Nottinghamshire landmark, both a historic and natural landmark.
The “Make” proposal is based on the image of a “tree house”. The building of the visitor center itself consists of a base that resembles a network of intertwined roots, from a powerful "trunk" 20 m high, and from a "crown" in which the observation deck and the restaurant are located. The “trunk” contains the stairs, and the platform at ground level contains all the main premises of the center.
The area around the tourist center is formed by a series of ecosystems and historical reconstructions serving as educational resources (meadow, moorland, in addition: examples of medieval agricultural land, villages, coal mine), as well as as a transitional territory between the new development site and the nature reserve itself Sherwood forest.
The project also includes the possibility of rational use of resources during the operation of the new structure: wind turbines will be installed in a nearby grove to generate electricity, and the center will be heated through a system that uses heat generated by biomass.
