Now the territory, which will be turned into a new public space, is occupied by buildings of different times of the complex of the University Hospital of Santa Chiara, the oldest of which date back to the 13th century. This site is bordered by the famous Pisa Cathedral (Piazza dei Miracoli) ensemble, one of the most famous monuments in Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This arrangement imposes a special responsibility on the architect who is going to erect any building nearby.
During the implementation of Chipperfield's urban development project, it is planned to dismantle most of the ensemble of the Santa Chiara hospital, and the hospital itself will be moved outside the boundaries of the Old City.
In its place there will be a group of separate buildings, historical and new buildings, distinguished by a clear geometric shape and delimited by clearly verified spatial intervals. They will be separated from the famous "Square of Miracles" with a cathedral, a baptistery and a leaning tower-campanile, there will be two strict colonnades, between which a new public space will appear - a recreational area for city residents and tourists.
