Emirates' double-deck aircraft, each with a capacity of 615 passengers, will operate on the popular Copenhagen-Dubai route from December 1, 2015. This will be the first scheduled flight in Scandinavia with an Airbus A380. Having built the landing gate necessary for such a machine with two bridges at the same time, the airport of the Danish capital, which has no competitors in the Scandinavian region, intends to strengthen its position as a port for long-range flights - outside Europe. In 2014, its passenger traffic reached 25 million people.
Despite such ambitions of the customer, the updated Pier C is an example of a restrained design, where the main attention of the authors of the project was paid to the details. For example, the building received a butterfly-shaped plan: "sidebars" on the sides allow planes smaller than the A380 to park at two boarding gates very close to the building, and passengers will have a spectacular view of their noses through panoramic windows. For "Airbuses" there is a third boarding gate - at the end of the building.
The facades are clad in black panels, which contrast with the white color of the interiors: from marble floors to flat circles of lamps. In addition to the layout required for the airport with a minimum of supports and large spans, the architects made a single space out of the areas in front of the boarding gates and "lounges" for passengers, which is more efficient and convenient than the usual "zoning" for terminals.
The furniture was selected in cooperation with the manufacturers Fritz Hansen and Jönsson Inventar. Along with the classic chairs designed by Arne Jakobson, desks for standing work and “family” clusters are placed in the pier space.
To accommodate the Airbus A380, Copenhagen airport also had to expand one of its runways: for a liner with a wingspan of 80 m and a length of 73 m, the standard 45 m width does not fit, so the sides of the runway had to be added 4 m each.
