This area along the bank of the canal, not far from the port, despite its location near the city center, was a rather depressed and unsafe space, where developed recreational areas and infrastructure were almost completely absent.
Now, as part of a long-term redevelopment plan, Spears Locks is set to become a dense, multifunctional development with dedicated spaces for children's entertainment. The £ 100 million project envisages the construction of low-rise terraces with green roofs that will house offices, apartments, hotels and shops, as well as small art studios, craft workshops, etc. Several high-rise buildings are intended to revive the silhouette of the area. Also, on an area of 12 hectares, parks and squares, children's playgrounds and sports grounds will be created, the infrastructure of the canal will be developed (new marinas will appear, a program of public events will be created). The cultural component of the master plan is grouped around the new buildings of the Scottish Opera and Glasgow Musical Theater Academy (GAMTA).
The new development will combine art, landscaping, water, city views and modern architecture against the backdrop of the historic warehouse buildings of Spears Wharf.
A strip of landscaped public spaces will connect the refurbished Spears Locks to downtown Glasgow.
