Winery "Bodegas Protos" is located in the vicinity of Valladolid, in the town of Peñafiel. Its old building was connected with 2 km of tunnels that cut through the hill on which the historic city center with a medieval castle is located. These underground passages, which have been used to store wine for five centuries, are also linked to the new winery building. This structure consists of a concrete base with an underground level of warehouses and a semi-basement workshop floor, and an overhead part in the form of metal and wood vaults resting on steel arches: offices, a small garden, and also an integral part of many modern wineries, especially built famous architects: wine tasting rooms, a reception area and a small auditorium. "Significance" of any new winery and its attractiveness to tourists is now considered an important element of the commercial success of the plant not only in Spain, but also in Austria and California, where "stars" of modern architecture are also working on these seemingly utilitarian structures.
A feature of Rogers' building is its attractive top view - equal in width waves of reddish-brown "vaults" are inscribed in an almost equilateral triangle of its plan. This was an important element of the assignment - all tourists coming to Peñafiel must visit the castle standing on a hill, and it was important to keep the view from there almost intact; at the same time, the new building was supposed to attract their attention and make them want to take a closer look.
