The clients, a couple of young collectors, wanted to build an abstract, geometric structure on a vast site about two hours from New York, which would be perceived outside of an explicit system of scales.
The solution of the Tsai villa resembles the construction of the same architects and Weiwei, also located in the state of New York - the ArtFarm gallery. In this case, the volume of the building is also divided into several equal blocks-"boxes" connected by transitions-vestibules. The wooden walls of the house are covered with corrugated metal sheets; in the interior the tree is covered with plasterboard. At the same time, the layout of the interior space meets the functional requirements of a traditional suburban dwelling, and is only partly related to the rigid decision of the exterior.
The living room, which occupies most of the first floor, is adapted for exhibiting works of art: it is well lit not by a direct stream of sunlight, but through the openings in the “vestibules”. Also, its extended plan resembles a private art gallery.
