For 3 days in summer 2008, each of 10 workshops - BIG, JDS, Atelier Manferdini, Dieguez Fridman, Emergent, Houliang architecture, Mass Studies, Serie, as well as the bureau of Michel Rohkind and So Fujimoto - were commissioned to design a building for the new administrative center of the district Huaxi is the capital of Guizhou province Guiyang. The master plan itself was developed by the organizers of this exemplary "workshop" - the Beijing MAD workshop together with workshop No. 6 of the Shanghai Institute of Urban Planning and Design Tongji. MAD also owns a project for one of the buildings for Huaxi.
Huaxi, although it is not an independent city, but a municipal district, has a special status. On its territory there are untouched natural zones and settlements of national minorities of the PRC, which have preserved their traditions; there are also two campuses of Guizhou University. This attracts tourists and potential students to Huaxi, and for the further development of this district as a tourist and cultural hub, the architects of MAD proposed to create a new central district there.
This international project has become a kind of "competition of ideas", as there are no plans for its implementation yet.
