The new building will be located in the Hexi district, where a new "cultural quarter" with an area of 90 hectares is being created: a huge complex of the city museum has already been erected in the form of a stylized figure of a swan, an opera house and other cultural and entertainment institutions are also planned.
The restrained forms of the KSP art gallery develop the traditional “house with yard” type: the rectangular block of the main building is adjacent to the “plinth”, on the roof of which an outdoor sculpture exhibition will be held. The building is surrounded by a fence made of natural stone, and all its facades and many rooms are faced with the same material. Glazing tapes will enliven the surface of the walls.
Inside, the main place will be occupied by a permanent exhibition of four sections: calligraphy, sculpture, contemporary art and Western art. Five halls will be allocated for temporary exhibitions.
The gallery's upper floor area is designed for master classes and workshops. Also in the gallery are planned spaces for a library, cafe, restaurant and administrative premises.
Construction will begin in December 2009.
