The building will be located on the highway Avenida Atlantic running along the famous beach. It is intended for the Museum of Image and Sound (Museu da Imagem e do Som do Rio de Janeiro - MIS-RJ), the collection of which is currently scattered across several buildings in different parts of the city. To replace them, it is planned to create a single center for research and preservation of the cultural heritage of Brazil: on a total area of 6,000 m2, exhibition halls, auditoriums, restoration laboratories and offices will be located. Now on the site of the future museum is the Help nightclub: it was acquired by the state for demolition.
Since we are talking about an important site from an urban planning point of view - one of the "showcases" of the city, a closed competition was held, in which three foreign workshops took part: "Diller Scofidio + Renfro", the bureau of Daniel Libeskind and Shigeru Bana, along with four local: Bernardes & Jacobsen and Brasil Arquitetura from Rio de Janeiro and Tacoa Arquitetos and the office of architect Isay Weinfeld from São Paulo.
The variant "Diller Scofidio + Renfro", a bit reminiscent of their recent project for the Brown University Arts Center in Providence, America, was not only very popular with the jury, but also received the most votes from readers of the popular Brazilian newspaper O Globo.
