As in the case of the recent competition for the design of the new building of the city library, it is about adding a modern building to the structure of Gunnar Asplund. The forest cemetery (Skugschürkogarden) was designed by the architect for several decades. The original building of the crematorium with three chapels - Vera, Nadezhda and the Holy Cross - was the last to appear in this memorial complex, in 1935-1940. Over time, its technical equipment was updated, but now this resource has been exhausted: for the next modernization, the building itself would have to be rebuilt, which is unacceptable. Therefore, it was decided to erect a new crematorium at some distance, and use the Asplund structure only as a farewell hall.
The contestants were required to understand the essence of Gunnar Asplund's architecture and try to create a "timeless project" similar to his work, which was distinguished by "simplicity of material and craftsmanship of detail." Also, the new building was supposed to follow the existing composition of the ensemble - both the crematorium with chapels and the entire cemetery as a whole.
The presented works are supplied with mottos, the names of the designers are also known, but it has not yet been announced who developed a specific version. The five finalists included Tadao Ando, Caruso St. John, BIG, White and Johan Celsing arkitektkontor.
