Indeed, the exhibition does not change much from year to year, as does the eternally reconstructed House on Brestskaya, from which the “market” 1990s still inexorably emanate. However, such a tradition, apparently, is perceived by the participants of "Landscape Architecture" as an indicator of sustainability that is so necessary in a time of crisis - this year architects and designers pulled themselves into a familiar house with a vengeance.
As you know, the founder of this exhibition is Moskomarkhitektura, and its permanent patron is the main artist of the capital, Igor Voskresensky, who annually delivers fiery speeches at the opening of Landscape Architecture for the high quality of urban landscaping. Having visited the exhibition this year, we can say with confidence that the calls of Mr. Voskresensky have been heard.
Almost a third of all exhibition areas are allocated to urban landscape design projects, where the workshops of "Mosproekt-2" and "Mosproyekt-4" presented a variety of options for the improvement of squares, parks, boulevards, etc. And if a few years ago it was very difficult to immediately name at least one significant object of landscape design in modern Moscow, now the choice is truly great. True, I mean, first of all, the very number of realizations, because there are still problems with such quality as “modernity”. What is now commonly called "landscape design" - objects created using "green" technologies and environmentally friendly materials - is practically absent at the exhibition. But on it, compositions made in the classicist spirit are presented in abundance. For example, a square with a round granite flower bed and a fountain in the middle, built between the Stalinist skyscraper on Kudrinskaya Square and the building of Novinsky Passage. The project for the improvement of Krasnogvardeisky Boulevard ("Mosproekt-2") is also strict and serious. But the landscape architects of Mosproekt-4 and the LAARDI bureau consider themselves, rather, the heirs of the tradition of modernism of the 1960s: their projects (for example, the Severnoye Tushino park or the reconstruction of the area around the Raduga ponds at the intersection of Zhemchugovaya Alley with the street Youth) are more ambitious and laconic in the use of decorative elements. For the first time in the exposition of "Landscape architecture" there was also a project of lighting design for a complex of buildings - the Museum of Cosmonautics on Prospect Mira. Most likely, this is just the first response to the recent statement by Igor Voskresensky about the development of a new concept of a unified light-color environment for the capital, and there will be more of them in the coming years.
A relatively new genre for domestic landscape architecture is also the improvement of the territories of churches, monasteries and farmsteads, where designers are required to be especially sensitive to the historical and cultural heritage, the specific characteristics of objects and their special purpose. This genre is represented by projects for the improvement of the Assumption St. George Monastery and the Martha-Mariinsky Monastery.
Regions such as Yakutia, a permanent participant of the exhibition, are quite capable of competing with the works of Moscow architects in terms of the quality and scope of landscape projects. This year "Landscape Center of Yakutia" showed an interesting project for the reconstruction of a park-monument to exiled Poles in Yakutsk. The area, once flooded by the city's drainage canal, is now revitalized with elegant wood flooring and compositions from native plants.
Even at the first cursory acquaintance with the exposition, it is striking how, in comparison with previous years, the number of private objects has decreased. Obviously, the landscape workers, like the rest of the shop representatives, have experienced all the "delights" of the economic crisis. Orders have decreased by an order of magnitude, but the stylistic preferences of customers have not yet come to a common denominator. As the exposition in the House on Brestskaya vividly testifies, the overwhelming majority of private gardens continue to be designed "in styles" - here there is antiquity, and Victorian England, and Art Nouveau. For example, the project "Ninfei Story" is imbued with the spirit of antiquity: a real peristyle has been created on the personal plot, inside of which is a miniature copy of the famous Ninfa Garden. The Krasnodar residential complex "Royal Square", which reproduces not just anything, but the Parisian Vosges square, is also striking! The French regular park serves not only as a treat for the eyes, but also as a "cover" for the underground 2-level parking.
The abundance of works of this kind greatly exacerbated the desire to find at least a few truly modern and innovative projects at the exhibition. And persistent searches were rewarded in the end. For example, an interesting project for landscaping the roof of a pumping station is envisaged as part of the reconstruction of the floodplain of the Chermyanka River (a team led by G. Likhterova) - a labyrinth park, a playground and a sports area are being set up on the roof of an industrial facility. And Anton Kochurkin from the 8 Lines architectural group presented at the exhibition a project of a meteorological tower - a 40-meter structure, which will be part of the planned scientific meteorological center, is an interactive weather indicator. The stele is covered with a transparent material, under which LEDs are hidden - they will project weather data onto the surface of the tower. Interestingly, this facility uses exclusively solar energy for its work. The original design and compositional solutions also drew attention to the Berloga exhibition pavilion on Lake Seliger (INN - GROUP), reminiscent of Yuri Grigoryan's Mercury Theater in its folds, and Parovoz, the witty kebab maker of the Tvoryuki art group.
That part of the exhibition space, which this year due to the crisis was not occupied by private projects, was used by students of the Department of Landscape Architecture of the Moscow Architectural Institute and the Faculty of Soil Science of Moscow State University to exhibit their graduation works. It also houses art objects made in the framework of the new competition nomination "Tree of Life". Among others, two "trees" stood out for their scale - a wooden idol of Yakut designers and a huge character invented by the architect Kirill Bair. Two well-known studios - the children's art school "Start" and the workshop "TAF" also did not stay away from experiments with the "tree": the first ones dressed up in flower-bed dresses of mannequins, and the second made a tree of "culture and traditions" from which "sprouts creativity ".
A complete list of laureates of the Landscape Architecture. A View from Home …”we will publish on November 2 when the winners are announced by the jury. However, even now, with a high degree of probability, it can be predicted that almost all participants in the competition will receive awards, since there are a lot of nominations in it, and all the characters are familiar and friendly with each other. And this once again makes us think about the very format of this event. Of course, the annual review of achievements in the field of landscape design is a very necessary thing, but the way it is organized and conducted today is less and less consistent with modern festival standards and the projects presented at it. Therefore, congratulating the Landscape Architecture exhibition on its anniversary, most of all I would like to wish it creativity and fresh ideas.
