In the coming years, developers and architects are not even trying to surpass the 800-meter Burj Dubai skyscraper, which is scheduled to open in January 2010, in the current financial situation, but many are ready to compete for an honorable second place. Among these high-rise buildings, two towers stand out for Seoul, which until recently was not the center of international high-rise construction.

Recently, the foundation stone of the Digital Media City Landmark Tower was solemnly laid: this structure by the SOM bureau will reach a height of 640 m when completed in 2014. In addition to its height and streamlined shape, it will be distinguished by energy efficiency: the building will consume 65% less electricity. than a standard building of the same size. This result was achieved by installing sun screens of various profiles (for example, on the east and west facades, they will protect from the rays of the sun located low above the horizon), green atriums that purify and cool indoor air, as well as wind turbines and solar panels that use a huge area facades of the building and the strength of the winds in its upper part.

Construction of another Seoul skyscraper, the 123-story Lotte Super Tower (555m), was supposed to start back in 2005, but was delayed until 2010. The building of the architectural firm KPF is a type of "vertical city": its lower part will be occupied by offices, higher apartments will be located, above them - a 7-star hotel. The 4 upper tiers will be reserved for the observation deck and entertainment facilities. The opening is scheduled for 2014.

Cesar Pelly's workshop is now working on a more modest project for Tianjin: the Xiaobailou Union Plaza in the city center will reach “only” 488 m (108 stories) in height. The complex will also include a series of smaller towers of various shapes, grouped around a new square.
