The ambiguity of the situation lies in the fact that until recently Zhuhai was just a village near Macau and received city status only in 1979. Now almost 1.5 million people live in it, and 20 years ago there were only about 150 thousand inhabitants. Due to its location in one of the special economic zones and the picturesque landscape, the city has quickly become a popular destination for leisure and business. Despite its developed industry and a large port, Zhuhai is known as a garden city: there are a lot of parks and sports facilities.
But the cultural component is still poorly represented there, and this imbalance is intended to correct the new museum. It will be located by the sea, on the northern outskirts of the city. Together with the opera house currently under construction on an artificial island nearby, the museum forms a new "gateway" to Zhuhai.
The new building will consist of two spiraling volumes, erected on a common base. The lower one will host an exposition dedicated to the history of the city, the higher one, 60 meters high, will host an exhibition of urban planning projects (the total area of exhibition space is 50,000 m2). Visitors, going up to the last, 8th floor of the tower, will see there a model of Zhuhai measuring 30 x 40 m and can immediately compare it with the real state of the city by looking through a huge panoramic window.
