The customer was the Muslim Council of Denmark: it will be the first purpose-built structure for this purpose in the country. The 46 m high building will be located in the center of the multifunctional complex. The prayer hall can accommodate 3,000 people; a conference center, an exhibition gallery, an auditorium and an Islamic library are also planned in a building with a total area of 4500 m2.
The project, according to the head of BIG Bjarke Ingels, combines the principles of modern Scandinavian architecture and elements of Islamic architecture. The façade of the mosque is formed by a tiled wall, a pentagonal "spiral" that rises upward until the completion of the mosque, which must also echo the spiral-shaped spire of the 17th century Freliers-Kirke church.
The inner space of the mosque will be mainly occupied by a prayer hall, which will be illuminated through the openings in the ceilings. Construction should start within a year.
