The center will be the largest building of its kind in Asia: on a total area of 141 thousand m2 there will be a concert hall for 2000 seats, an opera house for 2250 spectators, a hall for drama performances (1250 seats), a hall for solo concerts (500 seats), a library and rehearsal studios. This project is the largest investment by the Taiwanese government in the field of culture in the past 20 years. It is also expected to revive the port city of Kaohsiung, where it will be erected. The center will be located in the northeastern part of the new 65 hectare Weiying Park, created on the site of a former military base.
The inspiration for the project was a banyan tree, which is able to extend its crown, supported by additional trunks, over an area of up to 2 hectares. Likewise, the roof of the Weiwin Center measures 225 mx 160 m, supported by pillars-"trunks" A lot of free space remains between them, where the border between the building and the surrounding park will be blurred: this public space will always be cool and protected from the elements. The roof with the garden created there will also be open to the townspeople. An open amphitheater for several thousand spectators will be erected next to the building, reservoirs, small valleys with a bamboo grove and a butterfly garden will be created around the building.
