Basically, it is about converting an Art Deco building in Mayfair into a boutique hotel. This work will be carried out by Reardon Smith Architects, a hotel specialist. But, in addition to expanding the historic building, it is also envisaged to create directly on it, as an integral part of it, "works of monumental art" - the sculpture Habitat ("dwelling" or "habitat") by Gormley.
This construction of rectangular steel block modules slightly resembles the figure of a human or a robot. Inside it will be a hotel room with a bedroom, dressing room and bathroom. Anthony Gormley expresses his satisfaction that he was able to create an inhabited sculpture, which he has long dreamed of. In his opinion, this is a complete revolution in the relationship between sculpture and architecture, since usually statues either decorate buildings, or are exhibited inside them on pedestals.
The hotel will have 75 rooms in total; opening is scheduled for 2013.
