The new facility is for the Hunters Point area; the building will be erected among residential towers and ruins of industrial buildings, on the very bank of the East River, opposite the UN headquarters. It will be a rectangular block with a height of 24 m, the facades of which will be covered with aluminum sheets.
The main architectural solution will be huge window openings of irregular shape, allowing you to see the structure of the library from the outside and, most importantly, connecting it, by definition, alienated from the everyday bustle of the world with its surroundings: neighboring buildings, trees of the "reading garden" around, a park on the river bank, the sky.
Inside, the key role will be played by a lobby with the height of the entire building. Visitors will have to climb to the reading room they want (adults, children and teenagers are located one above the other) along a narrow staircase that runs along the main facade (and windows overlooking Manhattan), past shelves with books. A public space will be arranged on the roof of the library, also intended for lectures and performances.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2012.
