The industrial site is located between the city center and the area where the famous rock festival is held annually. Initially it was a cement plant, but now artists and musicians work there, skaters train. According to the assignment of the competition, the architects had to keep the "informality" of the 45,000 m2 complex.
For this MVRDV decided to leave the factory buildings almost intact, adding new volumes of the original form on top. All buildings are grouped around a spacious "plaza", but along its edges there will be enough empty space to arrange various events, including "spontaneous" ones, to build temporary pavilions, etc. Also, in the former workshops, there will be zones for informal creative activity.
The first stage of the project will be the rock museum itself (3,000 m2): it will occupy a rectangular block with a facade covered with golden spikes. The exposition inside tells about the life of a rock star. Its foyer will serve as a lobby for the entire complex, named by the architects ROCKmagneten, as well as a stage, and the audience will be able to sit both inside the building and on the square.
The headquarters of the organizing committee of the rock festival in Roskilde will be built in a volume, the walls covered with black rubber, which will be decorated with many loudspeakers; some of them will be real and used for concerts.
The Roskilde Festival School will be the third site in the complex; its main premises - classrooms, classrooms for self-study, recreation - will be located in the former factory building and will be grouped around the main lobby with a fireplace. Above the building, a round-shaped dormitory volume will be built up: 3 floors with 80 double rooms.
