The building is located in the Ubersee-Quarter, part of the HafenCity zone, the former port of Hamburg, which is now being converted into a residential and commercial area. This 10-storey building (40 m) occupies an entire block. The lower part is reserved for shops and cafes, but the main areas are for offices and apartments, as well as a hotel and conference rooms.
The street facades are clad in natural red stone combined with glass and aluminum as a reminder of the red brick walls of historic port facilities. But the construction also brings to mind the Chilihaus office building, the work of Franz Höger in 1924, which is located near HafenCity. Emphasized vertical profiles of the facades, red color and pointed corners can be found both in this monument of Expressionism architecture and in the structure of Egeraat.
Both also have a courtyard, though the similarities end there. Sumatrakontor has this spacious semi-public space, the entrance to which leads via a wide staircase from Ubersee Boulevard, the main district "highway". Reminiscent of the historic center of Hamburg, the courtyard facades are covered with white plaster.
In the interior, offices are accessed through the atrium, while apartments are accessed from the courtyard.
