In recent years, the load on the complex has increased significantly, and its expansion was required. The task set for the participants of the competition was to add a new building so that it would not visually overwhelm the existing building, which is under protection as an architectural monument.
Anderhalten Architekten implemented their "New Depot" between the historic building and the bank of the Leine river, solving it as a 190 mx 40 m parallelepiped, consisting of two volumes. The lower one, dark red, refers to the facade of the old "Depot"; the upper, transparent, is designed to give the building the desired lightness.
Construction will be carried out in three phases and will begin in the summer of 2012. The first stage includes storage facilities, then a multifunctional exhibition hall and conference center will be erected. Between the halls there will be a large atrium, through which you can admire the Laine River from the old "Depot". Completion of the work is scheduled for 2022.
