The Twin Sails Bridge ("Two Sails" or "Double Sail") spans across the Blackwater Canal near its confluence with the sea. It connected downtown Poole and its suburb of Hamworthy, which not only made life easier for pedestrians and motorists, but should also be an incentive for the development of the city. On both sides of the canal there are four former industrial zones, the regeneration of which the new bridge should facilitate.
At the same time, Poole is a popular yachting center, and the convenience of sailors was also an important theme in the design. The central part of the bridge consists of two unequal triangular lobes that rise to a vertical position, opening the way for ships. When viewed from a distance, they resemble the sails of yachts, hence the name of the structure.
In the dark, the bridge is painted in red and green tones; the lighting design was done by the Speirs + Major bureau.
