The museum is owned by the University of Michigan and is located on the edge of its campus. The dynamic lines of the building are inspired by the lines of the nearby highways and the vistas opening from there to the central part of the campus, built in the mainstream of brick neo-Gothic.
The elongated volumes of the building are emphasized by the cladding of the facade: the stainless steel sheets are folded into deep "folds". They are processed against excessive shine, as well as against "fingerprints": it is assumed that there will be many who would like to touch such an unusual structure.
Inside, on a total area of 4,273 m2, the halls of permanent and temporary exhibitions are located (they will occupy 1600 m2 on both ground floors and the underground level), the museum also has an educational wing, a center for the study of works on paper, a shop and a cafe. The building is adjoined by a sculpture garden and a spacious "plaza".
Exhibitions in the museum will be devoted to contemporary art, photography, new media, works on paper. Of the $ 40 million of the budget, $ 28 million was provided by a couple of collectors Eli and Edith Brod, who also donated 18 paintings from their collection to the museum.
The museum is expected to bring the local economy $ 6 million a year.
