According to this, perhaps the most famous of modern architects, the future exhibition will be a revision of the fundamental elements of architecture, characteristic of all countries and eras. In the process, Koolhaas hopes to discover something new about architecture.
The official theme has not yet been named, but the curator's descriptions remind of the motto of the previous Biennale “Common Ground”: obviously, in this period of instability, reliance on fundamental values is more relevant than ever.
Also, Koolhaas's appointment was not a surprise: rumors about this were already circulating at the opening day of the 13th Biennale in August 2012. This choice seems obvious: the Dutch architect is known as a curator of major exhibitions, not to mention the reputation of the original thinker.
As you know, the architectural biennale in Venice alternates with the artistic one, but much younger than the last one: its official history began in 1980, and regularly every two years it has been held only since 2000. Due to the less “accessible” content to the general public, in recent years it took place from September to November, in contrast to the artistic, which lasted almost six months.
This time, thanks to the ever-growing attendance of the Architecture Biennale (in 2012 it attracted about 178 thousand visitors and more than 3000 journalists), it will for the first time coincide in duration with the art exhibition, lasting from June 7 to November 23, 2014.
