His version won the "tender of ideas", which was carried out by the transport authority of the British capital Transport for London (TfL). The assignment was to design a new pedestrian bridge across the Thames, connecting the northern and southern parts of the metropolis, but Heatherwick went further: he proposed, drawing on the rich London tradition of landscaping, turn the crossing into a park.
The space above the water will be removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, where you can admire the panoramas of London, listening to birdsong. However, the bridge will also fulfill its functional role as a junction between the two banks, first of all, a business center in the north and a cultural one in the south.
With the help of landscape architect Dan Pearson, Heatherwick and Arup will finalize their project for a "more humane crossing" across the Thames by spring 2014. It is unclear if the £ 60m needed to sell will be found, but the Garden Bridge is already slated to open in 2016.
