1. London Borough Shoreditch

Shoreditch is located in the east of the city: at first it was built up by working-class districts, then given to immigrants, and today it has become a real center of street art and street culture in general, where there is almost no living space left on the walls from graffiti. Why did I choose not a building, but a whole area? In my opinion, this is one of the unique cases when a significant part of the city “adjusted itself” to the current needs and realities of life without external interference. The area evolved, and did it independently and even deliberately! The appearance of squats, galleries, fairs did their job: Shoreditch opened up to the city, residents, buildings, and functions changed.

And what did we get as a result? A real center of cultural attraction, another "magnet" on the map of London. The area is filled with iconic bars and shops spontaneously organized by box parks, and the world famous Whitechapel Gallery is also located here. It is here, looking under the bridge of the light metro line, that you can stumble upon the "traces" of Shepard Feri or Banksy, whose works are carefully covered with transparent hardboard so that no one spoils them. Shoreditch is more than its constituent buildings, it is a way of life.

2. Manufactura cultural, shopping and entertainment center in the Polish city of Lodz.

The authors of the 2006 reconstruction project are Virgile and Stone and Sud Architectes.

The architect of the factory complex 1872-1892 - Hilary Majewski

From this project in 2008, my acquaintance with the objects of redevelopment began, in particular, with their careful inclusion in the context of a modern city. Poznansky's factory has become in a small (especially by Moscow standards) city a key vacation spot for both citizens and tourists (more than 10 million tourists visit the factory every year!). Accurate restoration of old buildings, careful implementation of modern volumes and shopping galleries, landscaped squares and streets between buildings - all this has developed into a single, organic quarter.

3.

Liverpool Museum.

3XN Architects. 2011.

The building, located at the Liverpool docks, in the immediate vicinity of the famous Albert Dock, has become another symbol of the ability to preserve the old and adapt it to modern conditions. For me, this object is significant not only for its architectural expressiveness and plasticity, the connection of the building with the surrounding landscape. I also consider this building a vivid example of how cutting-edge architecture can coexist with historic dock buildings trying to preserve themselves in modern conditions (Liverpool's docks are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List - approx. Archi.ru). There is no "squeezing" each other out of the common space, no struggle for survival. On the contrary, there is a kind of reversal of roles: either the museum acts as a light background for the openwork brick buildings of the docks, then it itself becomes a white crystal against their background. An amazing combination!

4.

Federal Building in San Francisco.

Morphosis Architects. Project 2000-2003, construction 2003-2007.

The building is located in one of the central areas of San Francisco. The designer was Morphosis, which for me is an example of "uncompromising" architecture. It would seem, how can you build such "icebergs", completely futuristic buildings in the body of the city, when they belong in an open field, let them stand like art objects? But no: in a completely unimaginable way, a building with such a complex facade is organically integrated into the fabric of the surrounding buildings. And the most important thing is that the building for me is an example of how architecture is inseparable from the solution of the interior.

5. Residential complex The Mountain in Copenhagen

PLOT architects (now BIG and JDS bureaus). 2008.

We all talk for a very long time and a lot about the affordability and comfort of housing, then we remember its architectural qualities, and then we immediately forget about all this when it comes to the budget! So here's a project that combines accessibility (the object was built in a new residential area Orestad on the outskirts of the city, a la our Butovo, and is designed for "conditional" young people), comfort (thoughtful logistics, notorious parking, places of all-season recreation, etc.) and, of course, architectural merits. For me, this is an example of not only high-quality architecture, but also the social position of a developer. This is what synergy looks like!

Sergey Trukhanov began his professional career in 2004 and already in 2007 organized the Mealhouse Concept Design company, in which he worked until 2011. In 2012, he headed the architectural bureau T + T Architects, which he founded. During his work, he participated in almost all projects carried out within the bureau - from office interiors to projects for the renovation of urban areas.
