ABB, a leader in the group's power equipment and automation technology, has launched a high-performance wireless broadband Wi-Fi network for the city of Venice. The network provides free Internet access for residents and businesses (for a small fee), as well as 22 million tourists who visit the city every year. The contract was awarded by the Municipality of Venice.
The Wi-Fi solution includes a network of fixed and mobile nodes that can handle over 200 gigabytes of data and 40,000 subscribers per day. The network is equipped with 200 wireless routers, the cases of which are aesthetically combined with the historical architecture of the city.
Venice is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is also famous for its narrow, winding streets and, moreover, its stately buildings. The city is located on 118 small islands, which are connected to each other by canals. Among the features that distinguish the solution from ABB is the ability to automatically switch between two frequencies (2.4 and 5 GHz). This ensures maximum signal strength and uninterrupted connectivity, even in narrow and winding alleys. Onboard routers provide reliable uninterrupted roaming for passengers on the Grand Canal and other waterways in the city - another hallmark of ABB's solution. Residents of Venice usually travel by water transport for at least 30 minutes a day, and tourists much more, so the ability to access the Internet throughout the city is a great gift from ABB for everyone!

"The technology also offers quick and easy hardware installation." The Venice Wi-Fi project is part of Free ItaliaWifi and includes Rome and Sardinia. The goal of the project is to create a national network of free wireless broadband networks.
