Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki

Design site Photo: designguggenheimhelsinki.org

Site for design Photo: designguggenheimhelsinki.org The aim of the competition is to develop a concept for the Guggenheim Museum, located on the shore of the southern harbor in the port of Helsinki, close to the historic city center.

It is assumed that the museum will exhibit works of art of the XX and XXI centuries, as well as objects related to the art and architecture of Northern Europe. By the way, the collection's focus on design and architecture will make the museum in Helsinki stand out among the international constellation of the Guggenheim Foundation's museums.

The building, with an area of about 12,000 square meters, should include exhibition spaces and galleries, lecture halls and auditoriums, cafes, bars and a restaurant, administrative premises, a storeroom and a store. The museum should become a new landmark in Helsinki, so a bright project is one of the program points. At the same time, it is important that the new building be in harmony with the development of the historic center and the harbor. Do not forget about environmental friendliness, sustainability and traditional wood for Finnish architecture.

The competition will be held in two stages: the first round will result in a shortlist of six teams, which will continue to develop the museum's project.

dead-line: 10.09.2014
open to: architects and architectural firms
reg. contribution: not
awards: the winner will receive a prize of € 100,000; five other shortlist participants - € 55,000 each

Typhoon-class submarine transformation

Photo: korabley.net
Photo: korabley.net

Photo: korabley.net In 1975, the Soviet design bureau Rubin developed a Typhoon-class submarine (the domestic name is the strategic missile submarine Akula), which became part of the USSR Navy in 1980. This "weapon of mass destruction" 175 meters long and 23 meters wide has become one of the symbols of the Cold War. In 2013, the Russian government announced that two such submarines would be decommissioned due to their high maintenance costs and obsolete onboard equipment. Another submarine will be abandoned until 2017 as a training facility, after which the fate of “colleagues” awaits it.

The goal of the competition is to transform the largest nuclear submarine into a peaceful architectural object. The choice of the location of the new object remains with the contestants (it should be possible to get to its location by open waterways). The submarine can also be located on land, but no further than 200 m from the coast. There are no restrictions on the choice of the functional saturation of the object.

Illustration: www.museumofsciencefiction.org The Science Fiction Museum is a non-profit organization that does not yet have a permanent building. As a first step towards the capital structure, a temporary pavilion will be built in Washington, DC, which will be designed by the contestants.

The pavilion will house a small part of the collection, which should stir up the interest of visitors to the future "full-scale" museum; various lectures, seminars and other educational events will be held there. They also plan to collect donations for the construction of a permanent building.

It is planned to move the pavilion to another city in 3 years, therefore the proposal should take into account the possibility of quick and easy installation and dismantling.

Kitchen island from Corian. Architect: Zaha Hadid. Photo: dailyupdateinteriorhousedesign.blogspot.ru The task of the competition is to show how Corian ("artificial stone"), a material that has already become traditional for the end of the 20th century, can be used in the 21st century. These can be any elements invented for public buildings: interior details, furniture, sculptures - in a word, everything that the author's imagination and material capabilities are enough for.

In their works, the contestants should emphasize the main properties of Corian: hardness, absence of visible seams, the ability to take any shape, a huge selection of colors and shades (the organizers, by the way, recommend using the Corian® Deep Color ™ line) and compatibility with other materials.

The work of one of the contestants: Illustration: desall.com

The work of one of the contestants: Illustration: desall.com Chicco is a world-renowned Italian company that manufactures educational toys and products for children.

In order to develop physical skills, children need to move. But the active introduction of various electronic devices into our lives (and, accordingly, into the lives of our children) has led to the fact that children have begun to spend less time on outdoor games.

To remedy the situation, the contestants need to develop a toy on wheels for children aged 12 months to 3 years. The structure of the toy is very simple: a seat, 3 or 4 wheels and a handle for the child to hold onto. An additional bonus is the ability to transform the toy in accordance with age needs.
