Located between the historic center of Mons, 50 km from Brussels and the Great Meadows region, the Conference Center, designed by the deconstructivist architect Daniel Libeskind, was conceived as an architectural symbol of the entire region. The building was completed in time for the inauguration of the city of Mons as the 2015 European Capital of Culture. The new convention center is a key element in the city's economic recovery and serves as a link between the old and the new.
The conference center, which covers an area of 12 thousand 500 square meters. m, with contrasting geometric shapes, many of Libeskind's signature elements are embodied. Sharpenings and slots in the sloping walls and on the ceilings, the drawings framed by the doors, the angular shapes of the chairs are part of the overall composition. The conference center has three rooms of different sizes: 500, 200 and 100 seats, each equipped with bright orange “Tangram” chairs that Daniel Libeskind designed for Poltrona Frau.
Tangram is an innovative seating concept that combines the functional requirements of a conference room seating with the comfort of a chaise longue. The chair has a wooden structure with a non-deformed, fire-resistant polyurethane padding. The folding mechanism is made without springs and works using only gravity (it includes noise-absorbing nylon pads). Chairs upholstered in Pelle Frau leather® Leather Color System, fabric or velvet. The metal floor plates are painted with a scratch and impact resistant epoxy powder. The chair is mounted with a folding table top and a power outlet.
This is the first collaboration between Daniel Libeskind and the Poltrona Frau Contract.
