On June 12, the doors of the new building of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art opened, reconstructed by the star of world architecture Rem Koolhaas of the Seasons Pavilion in Gorky Park. The key concept of the work of the Koolhaas bureau OMA with the monument of Soviet modernism was preservation. The building, built according to a standard project in 1968, was adapted for the needs of the museum in the form in which it got in 2011. Not only the internal volumes were preserved, but also such details as fragments of wall cladding belonging to different periods of the life of the former restaurant … Outside, the surviving reinforced concrete structure was surrounded by a polycarbonate facade raised two meters above the ground.
The interior solutions were developed by the Moscow bureau FORM, which has already collaborated with Garage in the projects of the educational center and the headquarters of the museum. The choice of pieces of furniture corresponds to the line set by Koolhaas: samples that have stood the test of time have settled in the museum spaces, and advanced modern developments have become an addition to them.
The authors of the renovated Garage project also paid attention to the bathrooms, equipping them with SELV designer headsets from the German premium sanitary brand Dornbracht. Cooperation with a cultural institute of the level of the Garage Museum is natural for Dornbracht, because the company has been active in culture-forming activities within the framework of Dornbracht Culture Projects for nearly 20 years, supporting contemporary artists, architects and designers.
