In 2018, the Luzhniki Bolshoi Sports Arena will host the 21st FIFA World Cup, its opening ceremony and the final of the tournament. In order to meet the stringent requirements of the FIFA Organizing Committee, the stadium began a major renovation in 2013. All work is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2017. The total area of the renovated stadium, taking into account the stands, will be 221 thousand square meters. m., and the number of seats will increase from 78 to 81 thousand. As a result of the reconstruction, Moscow will receive a unique sports facility that meets modern world requirements for comfort. The reconstruction project provides for a diverse scope of work, including external restoration. The use of environmentally friendly heat-insulating material played an important role in obtaining the BREEAM certificate at the intertim “design stage” for the Luzhniki Grand Sports Arena. The certificate is one of the most well-known and widely accepted methods for assessing the environmental performance of buildings, which defines the standards for sustainable design and construction, as well as allows you to compare different buildings in terms of their environmental impact.
