Paveletskaya Square, which the architects took up WALL, has long been one of the “disadvantaged” points in the center of Moscow: most of it is occupied by the foundation pit of a shopping center that was planned here since the early 2000s. The implementation of this project was stopped in 2010, canceled in 2013. At first, the authorities wanted to arrange a TPU or a parking instead of a shopping center, but in February 2015 it was announced that a shopping center would still appear there, they wanted to choose its investors in 2016.
In May 2015, public hearings were held in Moscow, at which the Paveletskaya TPU project was presented, developed by the Research and Development Institute of the General Plan of Moscow by order of RV-Metro JSC and which also includes a parking lot and a shopping center.
The customer of the TPU project, to which the current publication is devoted, was OOO Spetselektromontazh with the support of the Moscow Investors Association. On September 23 of this year, this project was preliminarily considered and approved at a meeting at the Moscow City Architecture Committee with the participation of the chief architect of the capital. As a result of this consideration, the authors were recommended to present additional options for the stylistic solution of the area based on the proposed approach. The project of TPU "Paveletskaya" bureau of Ruben Arakelyan and Hayk Navasardyan envisages the transformation of Paveletskaya Square and the adjacent territory into a park space united by a common concept.
The idea of the park found its expression in the fact that the square “reacts” to traffic and pedestrian flows by changing the vertical geometry of the surface and solving the multifunctional complex on the side of Dubininskaya Street, where this building takes the form of a “rock” with a “lens” open to the square. The new concept of the square changes the Moscow reality by creating a fundamentally different model of “urban emptiness” with different forms of activity, spatial scenarios and types of perception (forest, crater, lakes, green hills, rain yards, snow yards, alley of silence). As conceived by the authors, the new landscape geometry, like moss, covers the industrial and technological space of the transfer hub hidden under the surface.
In addition to the park itself, an underground space, hotel complexes with apartments on Dubininskaya and Kozhevnicheskaya streets and a new Aeroexpress terminal are planned there.
The creation of a park on the square and boulevards along the adjacent streets will not only preserve the specific characteristics of the place, but also emphasize the role of Paveletskaya Square in the city, including it in the system of pedestrian zones on the embankments. The park and boulevards will create many scenarios for active recreation of the townspeople. Moreover, all commercial components of the project are located in the underground space under the park.
All parts of the underground space are connected by a logistic level that distributes human and traffic flows; the main entrance is planned there from Paveletskaya Square.
The new terminal of "Aeroexpress" will appear on the site of the cargo yard of the Paveletsky railway station, which, in turn, will be moved to the airport "Domodedovo". The terminal will make the movement of passengers to and from Domodedovo airport comfortable and efficient. On the 2nd and 3rd floors of the terminal, it is proposed to place a hostel according to the model of hotels of the CitizenM chain, and on the 4th floor - restaurants and a city recreation area for passengers.
