Architects.rf is a free leadership professional development program focused on unleashing the potential of Russian architecture and urban planning professionals. The program is being implemented by DOM. RF in partnership with the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design with the support of the Government of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities.

For the second stream of the program in 2020, 3334 applications were received from 63 cities of Russia. One hundred participants, selected on a competitive basis, together with tutors prepared individual projects for the development of the urban environment in nine groups. As part of the final module, which took place last autumn in Moscow, the finalists presented their projects to the expert jury.

Recruitment for the third stream of the offline program Architects.rf is already open, it will last from 11 to 25 January inclusive.

Uberizing schools

The project focuses on the problem of local communities' access to the resources of a typical courtyard school. The author suggests influencing the situation with the help of a modern tool of post-industrial economy - uberization. Yandex, Sberbank, Airbnb, AliExpress or Uber have already covered certain sectors of the economy, similar mechanisms will help unleash the potential and schools.

Most of the school buildings were built according to standard designs in the 1960s – 1980s. They teach 16 million children, but for the local community they are essentially a blank spot on the map. The closed regime makes the territory impenetrable, excludes it from the urban fabric and does not allow the use of the potential of the school as a district center. High-quality amenities, a playing field, a gym, a swimming pool, a media center, a library, cafeterias, an auditorium, musical equipment - all these resources are in the school, but they are not supplied to the residents of the area.

The school has great service potential, and digital tools will help organize access to them. A special application will allow the student to choose additional classes or circles, free teachers from bureaucratic red tape, and give a neighborhood resident the opportunity to attend a yoga class in the gym or an evening French class. You can also pay for services through the application.

Svetlana Vasilyeva, head of the MARSH design studio, chief architect of projects of DOM. RF Project Management JSC, graduate of the Architects.rf program in 2018, tutor:

Abdullah Akhmedov's project is dedicated to the evolution of the school into a multi-format and flexible service for citizens. The author proposes to create a mobile platform into which part of the school's functionality can be transferred. For example, the schedule and interaction of students and teachers on formal issues. This will allow better identification of temporary opportunities for sharing school spaces with other interested groups of people, “open” the school and return territories to urban space. It is important that the project takes into account both soft and hard. Its uniqueness lies in the complexity of the approach and the strong idea of sharing, which has no drawbacks, even the notorious issue of security in the project finds solutions. I wish Abdullah good luck and implementation of his plans.

Revitalization of coastal industrial territories in small towns on the example of a flax mill in the town of Puchezh, Ivanovo region

Nikita Vorobyov, Ivanovo, St. Petersburg Industrial Territories Redevelopment Group

Small towns of the Volga are explored in the project through the prism of their industrial heritage. The once city-forming enterprises are now abandoned or in decline, and also often restrict access to the Volga. The aim of the project is to investigate how widespread the problem is in the upper reaches of the Volga, as well as to find conceptual solutions for the development of such objects.

A characteristic coastal industrial area is the complex of buildings of the former flax mill in Puchezh, a small town on the banks of the Gorky reservoir. Considering the coastal location, natural surroundings, private beach, the presence of a pier and good volumetric characteristics of the buildings of the plant, we can talk about the transformation of the territory into a large recreational complex. Successful implementation will set a precedent for investors and businesses and show that redevelopment is possible even in cities with a population of less than 10 thousand people.

The selection of a specific function in the re-profiling of the industrial heritage allows the creation of unique tourist routes. For example, the Verkhnevolzhsky park of ruins, which tells about the history of the development of the plain-factory civilization of central Russia.

Evgeny Volkov, head of the concept department "Design Bureau R1", graduate of the program Architects.rf 2018, tutor:

Nikita Vorobyov drew attention to the complex of buildings of the former flax mill in Puchezh, when he was working on an improvement project for a competition of small towns. Nikita's approach is exploratory, thoughtful and systemic. Having deeply studied Puchezh and soberly assessing the potential for redevelopment of a large industrial complex in a very small city, Nikita took the next step and expanded the focus of his research, trying to trace the general patterns in the development of industrial cities of the Upper Volga. It turned out that Puchezh is far from unique, but this is its potential: together with other Volga cities with an industrial heritage on the river bank, Puchezh can become one of the points of the post-industrial river route, a venue for events and an object of local tourism.

Historical Yekaterinburg. Merchant settlement. How to maintain and develop?

Lyubov Degteva, Yekaterinburg

Group "Redevelopment of territories with historical buildings"

zooming

Over the past 150 years, Yekaterinburg has lost about 3,000 buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries, but only 300 preserved. Its modern development looks random, sporadic, in no way connected with the uniqueness and potential of the place. This happens because it is allowed: there are “gaps” in the protection documents for cultural heritage objects, and the parameters of the new environment are indicated by “large strokes”. As a result, it turns out that soon it will be difficult to feel the uniqueness of the city and catch the evidence of its 300-year history.

I believe that the city needs a regulation that will include a comprehensive methodology for setting the limit parameters for development and determine what and how to save, where to build, how neighborhoods, buildings and public spaces should look like, and how to interest businesses.

As part of the project, I propose a pilot version of such a document for the Kupetskaya Sloboda, a historical district in the center of Yekaterinburg with the most intactly preserved 19th century environment.

Natalia Bavykina, co-founder and architect of APRELarchitects, graduate of the program Architects.rf 2018, tutor:

How to develop the historical part of the city and at the same time preserve its environment? The larger the city, the more active it is from the economic point of view, the more difficult it is to answer this question. Lyubov Degteva analyzed the existing urban planning documentation and the problems of degradation of the architectural environment of historical Yekaterinburg. Using the example of one settlement, I conducted a detailed analysis of the values and resources for development, thought over the vision of future harmonious development, and then put it into the language of volumetric-spatial regulations. The work is very relevant: today an architectural and urban planning council has been created in Yekaterinburg and work is starting on the volumetric-spatial concept of the city.

The concept of environmentally friendly development of Ribbon Bor in Barnaul

Evgeny Makarenko, Barnaul

Group "Open Public Spaces - System Projects"

Despite the fact that the Altai Territory positions itself as a clean and environmentally friendly region with a developing tourist and recreational function, Barnaul is on the list of cities with an unfavorable environmental situation, especially in terms of air pollution parameters. Among other things, this is due to the fact that there are fewer green areas within the city limits. For a number of reasons, gradual felling threatens the Lentochny Bor.

There are several options for the development of the boron territory: continue to build a medical cluster, build housing or develop the project of the tourist cluster "Sosnovy Bor". A comprehensive study of the territory, which consisted of an assessment of the environmental, urban planning and transport situations, a survey of residents, in-depth interviews with city activists and environmental experts, showed that the last option is preferable for Barnaul residents: a landscaped area and accessible sports and recreational infrastructure.

In my project, I formulated preliminary proposals for the development of boron and proposed options for their implementation.

Daria Alekseenko, tutor:

Evgeny Makarenko's project illustrates the scale and depth of the approach of the entire group, whose members were engaged in land improvement projects and the development of ecological frameworks in 11 cities: Vilyuchinsk, Irkutsk, Barnaul, Kurgan, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Veliky Novgorod, Vologda, Lipetsk, Belgorod and St. Petersburg.

Now Barnaul is only a transit route for visitors to the region. Evgeny has set the main goal not only to improve the tourist attractiveness of the city and to obtain the status of "gates of Altai", but also to improve the quality of the environment and the ecological situation for local residents. Ribbon forest is a unique landscape monument, you need to work with such territories with care. It is important to articulate not only the ecological, but also the economic value of the site. It was the side of added value that Evgeny promoted, describing the situation with the stakeholders closest to the territory, for example, the Medical Cluster. Local investors are already ready to support the project.
