The plan for a new guest house in a golf club complex near Lijiang City is composed of several pentagons. Their free connection with each other made it possible for the architects to include small courtyards with trees growing there in the building space. This made it possible to revive the interior of the villa with the play of light and shadow, to connect it with the surrounding natural space. This gave the name to the building - "Wood House". And the simple connection of one pentagon module to another will make it possible in the future to easily expand the structure to the desired size, if the need arises.
The house partially overhangs the surface of the lake, and it is on this reservoir that its "main facade" emerges, if we can say so about a building with a similar multifaceted volume. The snowy peaks of the mountains on the opposite side from the lake serve as a background for the villa.
The complex shape of the building is contrasted with the simplicity of the materials used (concrete and dark hardwoods) and minimal decor.
The Wood House is not the first collaboration between HHF architects and Ai Weiwei: they also developed projects for other buildings for the golf club complex, and their collaboration began in the early 2000s. Then Weiwei decided to create an Architectural Park in Jinhua, and invited architects from all over the world to build pavilions there. Along with Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, Toshiko Mori and Yun Ho Chan, HHF architects also took part in this venture.
