The complex, built on the shore of the Great Belt Strait, is one of the most accessible buildings for people with disabilities. Under the program of the Danish fund for the fight against neuromuscular diseases Muskelsvindfonden, the Musholm resort was expanded: there was a sports and recreation center intended for active recreation of people with various forms of disabilities.
The project was developed by AART with contributions from Keinicke & Overgaard Arkitekter, landscape architects BSAA Arkitekter and UrbanLAB, and engineers from MOE and D&N. Their task was to take into account as much as possible the special needs of the guests of the complex in order to create a comfortable space that motivates them to move and allows them to fully relax. During the design process, numerous consultations were carried out with specialists, and important details were modeled at a 1: 1 scale and tested by future users. As a result of this work, in October 2015, two buildings with a total area of 3,200 m2 appeared: a community center with a multifunctional hall and a residential periphery of 24 rooms.
The main element of the main building is a 100-meter ramp: climbing along it, a person goes around the glazed perimeter of the hall intended for concerts, lectures, sports competitions, passes a climbing wall adapted for wheelchair users, meeting rooms, a spectator “tribune”, the upper point the zipline, from where you can return by air to the middle of the ramp, and ends its journey at the observation deck with a panoramic view of the coast.
The residential part of the complex is an open loop in the plan; this shape allows the building to fit neatly into the landscape. The corresponding geometry of the courtyard symbolizes the community, which, in turn, is "accompanied" by individual exits to the street through the terrace in each of the 24 rooms. All windows, doors, curtains in living rooms open remotely, the height of plumbing fixtures is adjustable, the beds are equipped with mechanisms for lifting the head part so that it is possible to bring a person into a half-sitting position.
The architects tried to create a space adapted not only for people with problems of the musculoskeletal system, but also for the visually impaired and hearing: they are assisted in spatial orientation by the light and sound indicators built into the surface, tactile maps are used to navigate the territory of the complex, and in meeting rooms the rooms have a special mode of enhanced lighting, necessary for people who read lips.
Rounding facades with alternating glass reflective and dense opaque surfaces change the perception of the prevailing landscape, opening unusual views of the seashore; such a unity with nature is also manifested in the wooden decoration: the facades are faced with larch wood, and ash is used in the interior.
The cost of the project, funded by charitable organizations, amounted to about € 13.4 million.
